I am going to Xiamen on a 5-day visit . But would like to split my visit to 3-day in Xiamen (instead of 5) & 2-day in Shanghai . I’m a newbie to China, thus comments & suggestions are much appreciated.
1. How do I get air ticket from Xiamen to Shnaghai ? Frm the local travel agent there or …? What airline(s) normally has the best discounted price ? Approx. how much in RMB roundtrip ?
2.What airport I’ll be landing in Shanghai ? Any transport frm airport to accomodation / city ? What kind to take?
3. Any suggestions for hostels that is convinient or easily excessible by public transportations ?
4. I only have 2-day in Shanghai, recommended places to go (within city) ?
5. I can’t read & speak Chinese, would I still be able to get around.
6. All other suggestions/comments are welcome.

Xiao Xiong:1.) You can get tickets from a travel agent. Airlines in China have vastly different policies than those in the West, so it usually doesn’t do you a lot of good to buy them in advance. Prices can vary from day to day and sometimes quite drastically. However, from Fujian province to Shanghai the price shouldn’t be more than 1000RMB each way. You may get lucky and find a discount that will save you $ 50 but don’t count on it since you’re a foreigner. The airline likely will be China Air or Shanghai air
2.) Your best bet is to take a taxi from the airport to your hotel. There will be a lot of people at the airport clamoring to take you somewhere, but don’t go for it — take a taxi and be sure that the driver uses a meter. If you stay at a major chain (such as Holiday Inn or Marriott, they may have a shuttle for you but you’ll still have to pay for it).
3.) Since you said you don’t speak Chinese, you had better not try to go to hostels or rely on public transportation. Though Shanghai is very modern, it’s not like Germany or France or anywhere else where you might be able to figure your way around by looking at a map and sounding out the words. Chinese characters are impossible to figure out if you don’t know the language. Some people speak a little English, but don’t count on bus drivers, taxi drivers or pedestrians to be able to help you.
Stick with a major Western hotel chain such as Hilton, Holiday Inn, Marriott, etc. Check their websites; you can make reservations online. They’ll have staff who can speak English and help you get where you need to go. They’ll even have travel services in the hotels that will help you arrange your trip.
That sort of answered most of your questions. Hope that helps. If you have any other questions, send me a message.
